TeamPAR had the privilege of touring the innovation lab in NYC created by ADP, known as Lifion. Lifion has designed a unique office environment that speaks to the Millennial generation. This environment attracts technically savvy talent to invent the next big thing in Human Capital Management. They work hard on big HR technology problems, laugh and learn from each other as they define the future of how people interact with the companies they work for.
How is this environment different?
Let’s start with how people sit. There are no offices or cubicles. Private rooms can be “booked” for an hour or a day and some teams are assigned “think tank” style rooms, where they can collaborate without disturbing non-team members. Their desks are sit-stand and the loft style office offers good lighting and large windows. Couches, ball chairs and stools are available throughout for variety and impromptu meetings. Ping-pong tables double as small conference room tables and gaming has been arranged in a family room setting to let off some steam.
Some of you are saying, others have been doing this for the past few years. Perhaps, but we’ve never seen a work environment quite like this!
What does an innovation lab offer?
- Chefs are cooking away in customized in-house “restaurants” that change their offerings of worldwide cuisine daily. Cold-brew coffee and tea are flowing & each floor has stocked offerings for the taking. From bottled water to granola bars and fruit and freshly prepared sandwiches – nourishment is at their fingertips – FREE OF CHARGE! You do not need to waste time or money to re-fuel. Brilliant!
- Lockers, showers and a gym are available 24/7 to ensure personal goals are met and endorphins remain high.
- Nap Pods are available for a power nap or to help lessen a headache and booths are scattered on each floor for collaboration or simply to enjoy a cup of coffee.
I think what we saw was unique, because it was working. Many open office plans are failing, due to noise disruptions. Lifion integrated acoustical solutions to promote privacy and prevent distractions. People are free to think and work as they prefer and this promotes productivity. Food, exercise and play are all provided so you do not feel compelled to leave.
What did we like best?
Honestly, the motivational quotes. Every available room was still transparent through clear glass walls, but emblazed on its surface was a motivational nugget remembered from an innovator. From Helen Keller to Thomas Edison and the past and current heroes of the internet age – these legends are motivating the current generation to walk in their shoes and invent the next great thing. As a happy, long-time ADP client, I was so excited to see that they are investing in innovation and helping us respond to the future of work.
Oh, and the cold brewed coffee – awesome! It keeps everyone motivated and energized!
